Fishing basin
How we will meet the need
In Tone La Maji rehabilitation centre, we do have the option to re-establish a fishing pond as it did exist in the past years. We can even enlarge the area to make it even more beneficial not just for the beneficiaries of the centre but also for many people in the community. The first priority is however to ensure a good food supply for the children and secondly a higher production, so that we can sell the over capacity on the public market in the nearby village. The effect of this will be a more sustainable future for the centre and the option to accept more children in the centre and to give them a better chance for a bright future. To fulfill this dream we planned to build (at the current spot) 2 basins of each 10x15 meters and 2 meters deep of brick walls including a purification installation, covering of the basin, fishing nets, baskets and all other needed equipment to take care of the fish and to be able to sell them on the market. In the current circumstances the most optimum fish to breed is Tilapia or Catfish. These are relatively fast growing fish and well known in Kenya and therefore easy to market. As soon as the production will be at a good level (expected within a year time) the facility will be self-sustainable.
Goals and objectives
In general: the development of a system for breeding fish to take care for the basic need of the centre plus the production of fish to be sold on the public market to generate a source of income for the centre for the centre in the long run.
Healthier food supply for the children: the availability of fish as part of the food supply for the children will help them to become healthier and get the right minerals for their bodies.
Education: The need to take care of this fish breeding plant will teach children to take responsibility for specific tasks that are assigned to them and will be an important part of their reintegration (social, psychological and economical).
Community building: At the same time the facility can be a great source of education for others youth and community members teaching them how they can become sustainable themselves by taking initiative and start similar projects. The project will also offer part time jobs, or to supply them with fish to be sold at the market. It also will offer the opportunity to stay in touch with the families of the children and help in promoting stable family environments that will guarantee better prospects for reintegration among the beneficiaries..

The available premise and Staff to take care of the facility
The territory of Tone La Maji is settled in wonderful green area and more important, it is a secure and protected area. There is plenty of space available to build the 2 basins at the spot of the former fishing pond. At the territory are a few buildings available that can be furnished for the production process and to take care for feeding the fish, prepare them to sold in the market etc. The current staff is very well able to take care for this initiative since they are already experienced in breeding fish on a lower scale using the pond that had been established in the past. There will be also part-time supporting staff available from the from the Koinonia Community office.
Timeline
As soon as the funding for the project will be available the realization of the project will start. Everything is in shape for a quick start. It is our dream to have the new basin fully functional at the beginning of next year 2015. From Q3 2015 we then will be able to have our first harvest and to start selling the fish on the market. All activities will be supervised, monitored and evaluated from the early start of the project and archived for best learning practices and to adjust the program in case of further expanding or duplication.
